About the film:
Grey, gloomy town McMurdo on Antarctica with its bulldozers, containers and box houses, is more similiar to a dreary mine village, than a scientific centre. And it is this place which is the beginning of Meetings on the edges of the world – another film adventure by Werner Herzog. However, its start is full of doubt. Industrial and cosmic landscape clashes witha romantic vision of the Pole. So from the very beginning the director confronts his vision and expectations with the reality. He browses old film materials and discovers trails of struggles of pioneers of the chilly South. He tries to understand what pushed people to this place. More and more carefully he observes the inhabitants of McMurdo and gets to know their traditions and customs. After some time he reaches many research stations scattred around the glacier – the real aim of his journey. Icy continent acts as a magnet for all kinds of talented freaks, dropouts and habitual dreamers. Explorers and researchers agglomerated here belong to the top of modern science, but they have decided to run away from the hustle and bustle of civilisation and work here. Werner Herzog is interested mostly in exceptional personalities, in people looking for sense in unclear spaces and fullfilling themselves in untypical activities. The impulse for the expedition were the underwater photos of Henry Kaiser, which amazes Herzog. Their esthetic strength and beauty had impact on the way of showing the Pole by coworking with Herzog, Peter Zeitlinger. In the film there are many moments, in which Harzog transforms secret underwater sounds and pictures collected on Antarctica, into a world looking as a different planet. The nature in his film is a silent and full of eminence participant of strange, human bustle.
